Description
This working group focuses on Frugal AI. The frugality of an AI method is defined relatively to the other methods that tackle the same problem in terms of the quantity of resources needed to reach the same level of performance.
The resources considered here can be of various types, including most notably computing resources (time and memory) and data.
The aim of this working group is both
to study the trade-offs between the required resources and the obtained performance of AI methods and to develop the tools needed to understand, visualize and tune these trade-offs;
to develop more frugal AI methods by either optimizing the use of resources of existing approaches or proposing new ones.
Focusing on these topics is of primary importance for several reasons. There is of course the general need to limit the power consumption of AI, though the precise impact of research on AI algorithms in this respect is rather difficult to predict, due to the rebound effect and many other social and political factors. Yet, developing less-demanding AI algorithms is also essential to improve the general accessibility to AI, for instance allowing its use on older, cheaper, embedded or GPU-free devices.
Working on the frugality with respect to data is another central issue for many applications. While general-purpose AI systems based on text and/or images are obviously trained on vast amounts of data, many other domains do not have the luxury to collect such large data sets for free on the Internet, and more data usually come with a cost and might simply be unavailable in particular cases. Therefore, even at the age of big data and deep learning, there is still a need to work on AI methods that can deliver good performance from small data sets.
